Case Studies- Westminster Hotel, London

1 comment:

  1. Was Westminster Hotel influenced by context? It is just as important to study the external factors of context or surrounding(environment) which have a particular effect on form making as well as the architectural form in itself. The overall location suggests that the architects were directed into arriving at this form due to vehicular circulation & or lot size/shape. As architects we are often seduced by the skin of a project, materials, shapes. Although the form itself takes on a protozoa type organism, this may not necessarily mean that the architecture itself is organic. What is the definition of organic architecture? All sciences, all aspects of learning have originated through, from observation. The observation of nature is the key in this. The greatest architecture either "refers" or "reveres" nature. The architect Vittorio Giorgini once stated that all man made techniques originated from 3 actions. Weaving, cutting, and shape forming with earth (clay forming). These actions are not reproduced by nature. I am not referring to the mimickry of nature which is no more than a classical painter painting a tree from observation. A modern painter, will abstract the tree taking its essence to re-form it in a way that is courageous, innovative and inspiring. This means that the "tree" + "our mind's interaction" with it is what allows for a shift in our new approach to re-forming it. Great architecture has many hidden elements of geometry within it, because this allows it to connect to less temporary things and gives it timelessness (existing through all times). Timeless architecture in itself, which may seem ancient or futuristic become guides or references to connect with because they anchor. Geometry becomes an organizing device acting as interacting fields that convey the narrative of architecture. Alignment is the great power of geometry. Do the case studies align with/to something? Does it connect or refer to another great piece of architecture or natural event. Does it refer to some unseen but imaginable point? Architect Gamal El- Zoghby discovered the galactic center as a geometrical point and aligned aspects of his residence to it. On a more basic level, the strike and movement of light across the surface of a facade may be orchestrated as well.
